Why German Shepherds Are the Best Pets

When you're a dog lover and looking into bringing one into your home, you may spend hours and hours searching and trying to find the right one for you. Every dog is different and they all have their own personality and skillset, but if you are looking into getting a German Shepherd, you've come to the right place to find out why they are the best pets.

1. Intelligent dog breed

German Shepherds are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world. They're considered the third smartest breed of dogs. German Shepherds have fast and retentive memory, which helps them understand and remember key words, as well as learning tricks that are taught by its owner.

2. German Shepherds respect their owner and protect them

They are extremely caring and protective of their owner. They are known for being fearless and self confident. Why are they so protective? The reason why they are so protective of you is because they think you are in danger. They will most likely be protective if new people come around. You can easily train them to listen to your commands.

3. High energy levels

It's no surprise that the German Shepherd is a high energy breed. They enjoy being active and playing. It is important that they receive daily exercise and maintaining their fitness level can help them avoid health problems as they age.

4. One of the top guard dog breeds

German Shepherds will usually take to be a guard dog naturally. However, it's important that you train them to be obedient.

5. Generally healthy

German Shepherds should be kept on an healthy diet and should be given proper grooming and care.

6. German Shepherds love children if you give them the proper socialization training from an early age.

When German Shepherds are young and you train them well they will love to play with children but don't let your child try to play with them while they are eating or trying to be alone. Sometimes they don't understand their own strength especially when they are young and full of excitement. You can teach a German Shepherd how to behave around new babies by wrapping a doll in a blanket. You could also use the doll to teach them not to go into the baby's room or bark during sleep time.

7. Can easily adapt to any lifestyle

This is probably one of the best things about German Shepherd dogs. You'll have no problem trying to adjust your day according to your dog as they can easily adjust and suit your lifestyle.

Know Your German Shepherd

  • Size: German Shepherds can grow to be between 22 and 26 inches tall and roughly between 50 to 90 pounds. It's important to consider the dogs size with high-energy level if you have children because they can easily overcome your kids when they are playing. That is also why proper training is so important.

  • Life Expectancy: The average lifespan is around 9 to 13 years.

  • Grooming Needs: This dog regularly sheds but a lot of their hair sticks in their double coat. Brushing them regularly will help get rid of the loose hairs and prevent them from shedding their hair on your furniture and clothing. Other grooming needs include occasional bath, regular nail trims and proper dental care.

  • Exercise Needs: A German Shepherd requires extensive exercise and opportunities to engage in physical activity. They will be a perfect exercise buddy. It's also important to provide your pup with interesting things to do when you're away from home. Giving your German Shepherd things to entertain and intrigue them will keep them very much satisfied and out of trouble.

Overall, German Shepherds would make a great addition to your family. I hope this helps you decide if you would like to own one or not.

My dog is a German Shepherd

I own a German Shepherd and I'm very happy that I do. She is a German Shepherd/boxer/husky mix. She is full of excitement, very energetic, very loving and she loves to give endless amounts of kisses. If you would like my personally opinion, I highly recommend owning a German Shepherd. After all, as I mentioned above, you can easily train them.
